Tip #9: Publicize Your Site in E-Zines
E-Zines are newsletters on a particular topic delivered periodically via email (the name “e-zine” is short for “electronic magazine”). Publishing an article or buying an advertisement in e-zines is a way to take advantage of an email list that has already been built by someone else. By choosing an e-zine related to your product or service, you can reach your target market and drive traffic to your web site.
To find an appropriate e-zine, use a directory like John Labovitz’s E-Zine-List at www.e-zine-list.com, which is maintained by volunteer editors. Click on the “keywords” link at the top of the page to see a list of categories. The Ezine Directory at www.ezine-dir.com is another directory maintained by editors. It’s a bit cluttered with Google ads, but contains more useful information like subscriber counts.
Many of the e-zines listed in those directories are published by web sites promoting their own product or service, so look for one that isn’t affiliated with one of your competitors. Contributing an article is preferable to buying an ad both because of the cost savings, and because editorial content is more credible that advertising. Just be sure your article or byline includes a link to your site!
